  • Berlin, Germany. 27th January 2019. Today marks the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, an annual day of commemoration developed to help prevent future genocides. During World War II, six million Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust. The selected date of January 27th marked the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. According to a new Eurobarometer Survey published recently by the European Commission, 66 percent of those surveyed in Germany believe anti-Semitism is a problem in their country, compared to 50 percent across the EU. Furthermore, only 53 percent of Europeans surveyed believe Holocaust denial is a problem in their country, compared to 71 percent in Germany. / Pictured: Droplets of rain fall on the Monument to the Deported Jewish children "Trains in the life - Trains in the death" – located on Georgenstraße.

  • Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK. 26th December 2018. Hundreds of spectators and animal rights supporters congregate in Grantham to watch the annual festive meet of the Boxing Day Belvoir Hunt. Earlier this month, Grantham Labour Party wrote to Lincolnshire Police opposing the gathering. The Duke of Rutland's annual hunt was also told it would not receive the traditional welcome from the town's mayor and has now been moved from St Peter's Hill outside the Guildhall to Riverside Pastures. For at least 130 years the hunt has held its meet in the centre of Grantham, but according to the secretary of Grantham Labour Party, John Morgan, recent criminal behaviour of hunt followers meant there was an increased concern for public safety. // Pictured: Pro and anti-hunt supporters gather at the Riverside Pastures where this year the crowd and riders are separated by a steel fence. / Lee Thomas, Tel. 07784142973. • Lichfield Cathedral, Lichfield, Staffordshire, UK. 16th August 2018. Hundreds of invited guests watch as Lichfield Cathedral is spectacularly lit up to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice. “The Great Exhibition: Imagine Peace” is a profound and reflective light and sound installation from the Cathedral’s Artist-in-residence Peter Walker, alongside the award winning team Luxmuralis, which is displayed both inside and outside the Staffordshire Cathedral, taking visitors through a series of immersive artworks. Included is the 'Peace Woodland' that creates a labyrinth of exploration as visitors enter The Great Exhibition, walking through 1,918 recently installed trees which envelop the Cathedral grounds throughout the exhibition. The “Peace Woodland”, a living artwork (again created by Peter Walker in partnership with Lichfield Cathedral and Lichfield District Council), references the end of WWI, the regrowth of the woodlands of the Somme and the Western Front, and the fact that out of conflict, hope returned. Once through the “Peace Woodland” the journey for spectators continues inside the Cathedral as the interior is transformed through a vivid series of light and sound installations, as nature is seen to grow over the architecture, a projection of 16 million falling leaves - one for every life lost in WW1, the Sistine Chapel recreated on the Cathedral ceiling as it opens to reveal the sky and psychedelic patterns. Mr Walker, who is in his third year of a five year residency with Lichfield Cathedral, is quoted as saying: “Imagine Peace offers the visitor the opportunity to say goodbye and honour all those who played their part in the Great War, those who lost their lives, and those supporting them on the home front.<br />
Both artistically and emotionally this exhibition is about putting ourselves into the story and taking a moment to think what that means. I want us to walk in the footsteps of the soldiers, I want us to think about peace, I want us

  • Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, UK. 2nd February 2018. Scores of Severn surfers were out in force today for the biggest bore of the year so far. Spectators lined the river banks to witness the four star bore and as no five star bores are predicted in 2018 this morning's natural phenomenon attracted hundreds of fans from all over the UK and beyond. The Severn Bore is generated by the Atlantic Ocean tide entering the Bristol Channel and forcing its way into the Severn Estuary, filtering into a narrow channel and causing the water to rise by anything up to 15 metres. The water reaches speeds of up to 20kmph as it nears Minsterworth and, as the width of the River Severn narrows, becomes held up causing the natural bore phenomenon. • Much Marcle, Herefordshire, UK. 6th January 2018. Pictured: Morris men perform their wassail rituals in the cider orchard. / Hundreds of people both young and old gathered at the Westons Cider Mill and adjoining orchard to take part in the traditional Wassail ceremony. The event at Much Marcle in Herefordshire was attended by the Silurian morris side who entertained the crowd with witty repartee, raucous dancing and music. According to their website, the true origins of blackened faces are lost to history, but are widely believed to be simply a form of disguise, possibly to overcome the oppressive anti-begging laws of the 17th century, and the eternal embarrassment of being a morris man. The orchard-visiting wassail refers to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England, reciting incantations and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year. // Lee Thomas, Tel. 07784142973.
